Playbill for Liberation

After a successful run Off-Broadway, the new play Liberation has transferred to Broadway with an Opening Night scheduled for October 28. Tonight was the first preview performance. Liberation is written by Bess Wohl and directed by Whitney White.

Liberation asks the question, what if you could talk to your deceased mother today and ask her questions about choices she made during her lifetime. Does she have any regrets? Would she do anything differently? In this case, a young woman figuring out her own life wants to know why did her feminist mother get married and have kids, and does she regret having her? Why did she seemingly stop her work around women’s liberation?

To find out, the daughter takes us back to the 1970s, where we meet her mother and other women fighting for equality. There is a good mix of laughing and tearing up as we re-live the 1970s, while at the same time assessing the current situation in 2025.

While the story is largely about challenges women uniquely face, it also dives into parenthood, work/life balance, marriage, relationships, and other complexities of life.

Liberation is a powerful story with exceptional performers. This production is high quality across the board.

The cast includes Betsy Aidem, Audrey Corsa, Kayla Davion, Susannah Flood, Kristolyn Lloyd, Irene Sofia Lucio, Charlie Thurston, Adina Verson, Britt Faulkner, LeeAnne Hutchinson, Matt E. Russell, and Kedren Spencer.

I expect to see multiple Tony Award nominations for this excellent production, now that it has transferred to Broadway.
