How do you present a history lesson about xenophobia, racism, slavery, friendship, and hope without making it too heavy? Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson figured out they could do so with a live-looped musical, where they create the show’s music live on stage each night. The music is fantastic, the lyrics are deep, and the acting and emotional performances provide the exclamation point.

To get a sample of the show’s music, head over to your favorite music streaming service, and search for Mexodus. You should then be presented with the song, “Two Bodies (from Mexodus)” as a part of your search results. Have a listen.

The first patron comments I overheard at the end of the show were, “I want to see that again!” (I agree).

Both Quijada and Robinson are brilliant performers and a joy to watch on stage. I look forward to seeing them again in the future. Mexodus is a show I would absolutely see multiple times if it extends again (it sounds like it will not) or if it transfers to Broadway (let’s make it happen).

Speaking of a potential transfer, there are so many parts of this show that feel Tony Award-worthy to me. The book, the music, the directing, the costumes, the sound design, and of course the acting all are so excellent and Tony-worthy.

Scenic design is by Riw Rakkulchon, costume design is by director David Mendizábal, lighting design is by Mextly Couzin, looping systems architecture and sound design is by Mikhail Fiksel (so good!), projection design is by Johnny Moreno, and orchestrations are by Mikhail Fiksel, Brian Quijada, and Nygel D. Robinson. Hope Villanueva is production stage manager. Every part of this production is excellent quality.

Prioritize seeing Mexodus before it closes on November 1, as this is a must-see show.
