[Disclosure: I am now a Co-Producer of Mexodus]
[Closing Performance update: Mexodus is a special show, and I have heard some people claim is one of the best shows they have ever seen. I liked it enough to become a co-producer on the show, and the review below was written before I became formally involved with the company. While the show has now closed Off-Broadway, there will be more opportunities to experience it. Stay tuned for what’s next.]
How do you present a story about survival, xenophobia, racism, slavery, friendship, and hope and make it fresh and fun? Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson figured out they could do so with a live-looped musical, where they create the show’s beautiful music live on stage each night. The music is fantastic, the lyrics are deep, and the acting and emotional performances provide the exclamation point. You will both laugh and cry, and the experience is just incredible.
To get a sample of the show’s music, head over to your favorite music streaming service, and search for Mexodus. You should then be presented with the song, “Two Bodies (from Mexodus)” as a part of your search results. Have a listen.
The first patron comments I overheard at the end of the show were, “I want to see that again!” (I agree).
Both Quijada and Robinson are brilliant performers and a joy to watch on stage. I look forward to seeing them again in the future. Mexodus is a show I would absolutely see multiple times if it extends again or transfers to a new home.
In this production, I especially enjoyed the costumes, the sound design, the scenic design, and I also really enjoyed the choreography and stage movement throughout the 90 minutes. The music is fun to listen to again and again.
Scenic design is by Riw Rakkulchon, costume design is by director David Mendizábal, lighting design is by Mextly Couzin, looping systems architecture and sound design is by Mikhail Fiksel (so good!), projection design is by Johnny Moreno, and orchestrations are by Mikhail Fiksel, Brian Quijada, and Nygel D. Robinson. Choreography is by Tony Thomas. Hope Villanueva is production stage manager. Every part of this production is excellent quality.
Prioritize seeing Mexodus before it closes on November 1, as this is a must-see show.
